Recombinant Monoclonal Antibodies

Recombinant monoclonal antibodies are antibodies that are produced using recombinant DNA technology. Conventional monoclonal antibodies are generated by immunizing animals with immunogens to provoke immune responses. B cells are isolated from the immunized animals and fused with a myeloma cell line to create immortalized hybridomas. Recombinant monoclonal antibodies, on the other hand, are produced using in vitro cloning. Genes for an antibody's light and heavy chains are inserted into expression vectors, which are then transfected into host cells for expression.

Bio-Techne offers a wide selection of recombinant monoclonal antibodies. We produce our recombinant monoclonals using a variety of methods, from expressing new antibodies to converting our existing hybridomas or rabbit antibodies to recombinant versions. By expressing our antibodies recombinantly, we can provide an immortal supply of consistently high performing antibodies.

Advantages of Recombinant Antibodies

Recombinant antibodies offer multiple advantages compared to traditional monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies.

Recombinant Antibodies are Easily Engineered/Modified

Once the peptide sequence of an antibody is known, it can be modified to fit your needs. For example, the Fc fragment of a recombinant antibody can be exchanged with another antibody class or species. In addition, the antigen-binding region can be modified to increase binding affinity or specificity.

Recombinant Antibodies Exhibit Superior Lot-to-Lot Consistency

Recombinant antibodies exhibit higher lot-to-lot consistency compared to traditional monoclonal antibodies as they avoid the issues of genetic drift and instability, which are typically associated with classical hybridoma-based technology.

Recombinant Antibodies are Quicker to Produce

Since animal immunization or hybridoma optimization is not needed, recombinant antibodies can be produced within weeks as opposed to months.

Recombinant Antibody Production is Scalable

The large-scale production of antibodies is typically needed for the development of diagnostic assays and new therapeutic agents. Because recombinant antibodies are produced by in vitro methods, it is easy to scale up the production of these reagents, even into the gram quantities upon request. Additionally, since we develop our recombinant antibodies in-house, we can provide our customers with a continual supply.

Recombinant Antibody Manufacturing is Animal-Free

Unlike traditional antibodies, production of recombinant antibodies does not require the use of animals. They are purified from the tissue culture supernatant of transfected host cell lines.
