Stem Cell Markers

Functionally, stem cells are able to propagate and generate additional stem cells, and can differentiate into various progenitor cells which further maturate along specific lineages. Stem cell markers allow for the identification and isolation of stem cells in different types of tissues and cell populations. Such markers allow for identification of embryonic, hematopoieticmesenchymal/stromalneural and cancer stem cells. Embryonic stem (ES) cells, derived from the inner cell mass of preimplantation embryos, are recognized as the most pluripotent population, having the greatest developmental potential. However, for many applications adult stem cells may be preferred due to ethical issues involved in the derivation of ES cells. Stem cell research is poised to allow the development of new therapies through repair, replacement and regeneration of damaged or diseased cells and tissues making it one of the most exciting frontiers in modern medicine.
