An organoid is a three-dimensional (3-D) miniature version of an organ generated in vitro from either pluripotent stem cells (ESCs or iPSCs) or adult stem cells that mimics the multicellular composition, architecture, and functions of the tissue of origin. Organoids are capable of self-renewal and self-organization and are amenable to long-term cultivation and manipulation, making them stable model systems for investigating human organ development and diseases, screening for drug toxicity, and exploring personalized medicine.
Organoid models have been developed for a wide variety of different human organs, including intestines, stomach, liver, lung, brain, pancreas, heart, and prostate, among others.
